Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts. 1 John 5:21
We have shows that pick singers to be our “idols”…but what is a true idol?
According to Google, an idol is “an image or representation of a god used as an object of worship”. Webster goes on to say, “a false god”. THERE IT IS…a false god. When I think of false gods I picture that scene from “Ten Commandments” where the Isrealites had just crossed the Red Sea and Moses was on the mountain. The people came to Aaron looking for guidance. He told them to bring all their gold and silver. He fashioned statues and the people worshiped.
Let’s look at what idols are today. Today we do see people worshiping other gods. What about Christians? We believe God is the one true god…so how are we guilty of false worship? Money, food, career, spouse, children, possessions, self, praise from others, pastor. These are things that are good, so we often miss how we could be putting them ahead of God.
Now that you’ve identified the idols, how do you guard your heart against them? Be faithful to pray and thank God for your blessings. Ask God to show you where you have misplaced worship. If the thing you idolize is something you can’t stop worshiping, then remove it from your life. If your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell. Matthew 18:9
When I first heard my pastor preach on that I was like, “Whoa! That’s extreme!”…Until I did it (metaphorically). I realized my job was my idol. I prayed God would remove it. He did! Not only did he take my job away, he shut every door to that career. I felt such relief from not living everyday putting my career before my creator.
Here’s some scripture to help get you started:
Those who worship false gods turn their backs on all God’s mercies. Jonah 2:8
You must not have any other god but me. Exodus 20:3
I love you and can’t wait to see you again!
